Exercises to Get Ready for the Slopes

As Carnival season begins in New Orleans, many locals pack their bags and head north for the slopes!  But before you pack your gear, make sure you are properly conditioned for skiing.  Cardiovascular exercise and leg strengthening are a “must” before your trip.  You’re never to old to ski; you just have to properly prepare for it.  Watch Rich demonstrate some exercises that will get you ready for your next ski trip.

Here are some tips to help make it a great, injury-free trip:

  1. Add plenty of cardio to your routine. The air is thin. It’s hard to get oxygen to your muscles. Running, walking or other aerobic activity will help get your cardiovascular system primed for the trip.
  2. Strength training is crucial, especially for your core and legs. Muscle fatigue will reduce your performance. Lunges, step ups or leg presses are all excellent exercises for ski training.
  3. Brush up on your ski fundamentals. YouTube has some great tutorials to get you ready for the slopes!

This month we would like to highlight SportFIT superstar, Lily Labiche.  Lily is a freshman tennis player at St. Mary’s Dominican High School.  She came to BRIO in September of last year looking to take her fitness and tennis game to the next level…and she certainly did!

In 2014, Lily has won…

  • 1st place in singles girls 14’s – Level 3 – Montgomery, AL
  • 1st place in singles girls 14’s – Level 3 – Jackson, MS
  • 4 of 6 matches – Level 1 – Macon, GA
  • 1st place in singles girls 16’s – Level 4 – New Orleans, LA
  • 6 of 8 matches (MVP Louisiana) – Level 1 – Chattanooga, TN
  • 2nd place in singles girls 16’s – Level 3 – Baton Rouge, LA
  • 4th place in singles girls 14’s – Level 2 – Mobile, AL

lily3Lily utilizes her speed and quickness on the court to take the ball early and keep her opponents off balance.  Although Lily has obviously established herself as one of the top singles players in the South, she has also impressed others with her attitude and character on the court winning two Sportsmanship Awards in 2014. We are so proud of your accomplishments this year, Lily, and look forward to great things from you in 2015.  Thank you for the effort and excitement you bring to BRIO every time you train with us!
